Fruits and vegetables are grown in fields, orchards, and on farms. Sometimes rocks, metals and glass particles buried in the dirt are harvested along with the fresh foods themselves and inadvertently enter into the production process. Also, occasionally, pieces of equipment like mesh screens, nuts or bolts fall into the fruit and vegetable piles as they are being sorted, cleaned, and packaged. And if the fruits, like various berries are being added to other products (jams, prepared foods, or bakery goods), there are more areas in the plant where potential contaminants may be introduced.
Look for fruits and veggies with smooth, intact skins. Avoid shriveled or wrinkled produce, as it is probably past its prime. Produce with holes or bruises may be cheaper, but will spoil faster, so don’t buy it unless you can eat it right away. Don’t be afraid of that multicolored pepper or lumpy tomato
• Assessing quality: Inspectors use their senses to evaluate the quality of the fruit or vegetable. They consider the fruit’s smell, touch, and appearance. They also check for mold, bruises, and spots that indicate damage.
• Measuring physical characteristics: Inspectors use instruments to measure the fruit or vegetable’s temperature, firmness, sugar content, weight, and size.
• Evaluating internal quality: Inspectors cut samples to assess internal damage or defects.
• Grading: Inspectors use size rings to grade the fruit or vegetable.
• Providing advice: Inspectors provide advice on the expected shelf life and development of the fruit or vegetable.
• Ensuring proper storage: Quality control staff ensure that raw fruits and vegetables are stored in suitable conditions of temperature and humidity. They also ensure that the fruits and vegetables are protected from rodents and insects.
• Verifying grades: Inspectors use statistical methods to determine the sample size to examine in a lot of prepackaged fruit or vegetable.
